Not only here in Germany is the New Year already in full swing, but also in Tanzania, where the new school year has started again for the children. However, we don't want to miss the opportunity to take a brief look back at the end of 2024!
December is always a particularly exciting month, as all the children return from their boarding schools to the children’s village, and the dance and music teacher Hassan Mahenge leads a two-week workshop with them. He seamlessly blends traditional and modern dances, teaching the children how to drum and sing. In Tanzania, dancing holds deep cultural significance and is practiced across the country’s many ethnic groups. Whether at weddings, harvest celebrations, or religious festivals, dance and music play a central role—and this tradition is proudly carried on within the children’s village as well. Through these joyful, communal activities, the children not only express themselves creatively but also strengthen their sense of identity, belonging, and cultural pride.
When walking around the grounds during this time, you can hear singing echoing throughout the day, perfectly in rhythm with the beating drums. In between, there are bursts of laughter from the children, and you see focused, determined faces as they learn the new dance routines. The atmosphere is carefree and joyful for the children. While the days are full of lively energy and activity, by evening everyone is exhausted and falls asleep quickly, worn out from the fun, movement, and excitement.
