The path to a self-determined life
A balanced, nutritious diet and a loving home are the foundation for the healthy development of children at the AOHM Children’s Village. With consistent support starting from kindergarten, combined with appropriate school and vocational training—tailored to each child’s abilities—the transition to a self-determined life is possible.
School – Education – Career
After four years of secondary school, they achieve a qualification equivalent to a secondary school leaving certificate.
During secondary school, the children receive support in career orientation and vocational choice. Regular conversations with their social workers, career information days with alumni, visits to various workplaces, and internships in different professional fields help guide their decisions and prepare them for the future.
After obtaining the secondary school leaving certificate (O-Level), young people apply for college, a Vocational Training Center (technical school), or the higher secondary qualification (A-Level). Clear guidelines ensure fair support for every child. The focus always remains on the individual interests and abilities of each young person.
Students have the opportunity to pursue training in various vocational fields at several regional and nationwide training centers or colleges. Typically, these programs last between two and three years.
Upon earning the "Advanced Level" qualification (A-Level), equivalent to the German Abitur, students have the opportunity to attend university. To pursue higher education, each student must apply for a study loan through the Tanzanian government. Additionally, a separate application for support is required from the Tanzanian management and the German association.
Entering the job market in Tanzania can be challenging, as the employment situation is difficult and most graduates or trainees have limited work experience. Where needed, we support their integration into the workforce through funded internships or by providing starter packages to help them begin self-employment.
These initiatives create opportunities—not only for the children in the village, but for the wider region as well. They equip young people with skills that can secure income in the long term. At the same time, they strengthen self-worth: when someone creates something of their own, they feel the power to make a difference.
Over 100 young people from the children’s village and the HBC program have already successfully made the journey toward independent, self-determined lives. This achievement was only possible thanks to the tireless dedication of our Tanzanian staff and the generous support of donors in Germany.
